In the past two weeks, Canada has elected - and now sworn in - a new government and leadership for the country. Guess what, Peterborough? You elected the Honourable Maryam Monsef, our new Minster of Democratic Institutions. This is exciting news for the riding, Hon. Monsef, like all of our candidates, was a great supporters of the campaign and advocated on many occasions for youth to vote - regardless of who they supported. We are also very optimistic about future opportunities to work with Hon. Monsef to continue to build opportunities of engagement for Peterborough's young citizens.
Our original mandate as an advocacy group was to advocate for non-partisan voter engagement, or more specifically - to challenge the idea that Youth (18-30) are not interested in Politics. And we did it, local campaigns are telling us there was a huge increase in the Youth vote within Peterborough-Kawarthas. We're proud of this community, proud of this campaign, and excited to continue this conversation. Now we want to hear why you voted, how you heard about us, and any comments you have about the campaign.
What's next for Trent Votes? Over the next few weeks, our mandate will change. We will be challenging students, and the Peterborough Community, to continue to engage past the Federal Election. This means engaging with our MP and Minster of Democratic Institutions, but it also means engaging with community leaders. Our next step will be to build a new conversation: what happens after we vote? How do we continue to engage politically? We're in the process of making this conversation happen with our community partners and youth leaders. If you are interested in getting involved, you can contact Ashley at [email protected].
The conversation is far from over.
