Trent Votes is challenging the way youth think about politics, but we are also challenging Peterborough to change the way they think about Youth engagement in Politics. We believe that one of the greatest barriers to sustained engagement in electoral politics is the myth that youth just don't care. Youth do care about politics, and are willing to engage, but it's difficult to engage with a system which has largely ignored you.
So here is our challenge for Peterborough: On September 24th, from 4pm-6:30pm at Traill College we will be hosting our first youth in politics panel titled "Why Vote?" We encourage all local candidates and campaigns to join us, and hear directly from the young voices in the community. We have contacted a number of student leaders on Trent University's campus to join us for a conversation on electoral politics, student politics, and informal politics. Our message is clear: Young citizens are not apathetic towards political issues, we've learned to work around the barriers the system has created by disengaging with our issues and voices.
Questions will touch on a variety of political topics, and you can expect to hear questions which touch on the following subjects: Are you engaged in federal politics? Will you be voting? Do you vote in student elections? Are you involved in student government? How do you change a political discussion outside of Canadian political structures? Do you have to engage outside of Federal/Provincial politics to create change? What barriers do you experience in politics, do they effect your participation?
Finally, if you know of (or are) a student or young citizen in the Peterborough area who would like to participate in our panel please contact us ASAP. We're looking to create a panel (or two) with a variety of voices, experiences, and political viewpoints and would love to have you involved in some way.
This event is open to everyone in the Peterborough community, our target audience is youth/students who are looking to engage in politics and the federal election.
