WHERE: Gzowski Cafeteria
WHEN: October 8th, 4pm-7pm
WHY: To get INFORMED about local candidates & political parties!
Here's the deal Trent. You have two weeks to get informed. and we have two events to help you figure out the key Election question: "who should I vote for?" and we're here to help.
One thing you'll often hear during elections is "why should I vote? The parties are all the same anyways!" While it may be true that certain parties have similar positions on specific issues (say that ten times fast), the parties hold different ideas on how to resolve an issue, and the local candidates are definitely not the same.
But how do you figure this all out? How do you know the difference between the Liberal Party and the NDP? Or the difference between the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party? Information is key (check out our resource page)! Once you start looking at national party policies - check out Icanparty.ca for a great summary of issues and positions - you may find yourself leaning towards a specific party. But you can go much further than that - one of the best ways to figure out who to vote for, is to meet the party's local candidates.
So what is the 'Meet Your Party' party?
It's a party with the political parties! We know that Political fans will be attending our debate on October 14th, but we wanted to reach the group of students who don't feel like a debate will help them get informed. If you find Political jargon and the words candidates use a little confusing, this event is for YOU.
Why come should YOU come Party?
Like we said, Debates are full of Political Jargon, and strange terms like 'recessions' or 'left wing' or 'right wing' or 'centre of the road politics' - how are you suppose to know what Candidates are saying if you can't understand the terms they are using?
We're breaking down this barrier by inviting the Candidates to come and talk to students on their own turf. You get to ask the questions, you get to ask for clarification, you get to learn more about their position. You have more power in this situation. Demand some answers, ask big questions, and most important - get informed about who you will support in this election. That way on Thanksgiving weekend, or October 19th, you can VOTE.
Do you have questions about Election ID, voting, or just elections in general (how do they work?) - come out and ask us. We'll be ready to help you figure this out.
OK - but it's a party, what else are we doing?
We have plenty of activities planned throughout the evening! We'll have some 'election trivia' (with small prizes to win), you can hear from the candidates throughout the evening, enjoy some refreshments (cupcakes!), and participate in fun games and activities throughout the evening.... and more surprises along the way!
Come out and PARTY with us on October 8th! Invite all your Peterborough Friends.
