We need to talk about last night. As some of you may know, our student panel titled "Why Vote" which featured politically active student leaders was cancelled last night. What we didn't tell everyone in our limited space over twitter was this was due to low attendance. And while we were disappointed this happened, it spoke to the odds we are facing in this campaign. Youth and Students keep telling us they don't feel engaged in Politics, and it has gotten so bad that they don't even show up to talk about voting. But frankly, neither did Peterborough.
But then something great happened. Joelle Kovach arrived from the Peterborough Examiner to talk with us, and discuss reasons for the ever growing gap in student voting. You can read part of our discussion here: http://www.thepeterboroughexaminer.com/2015/09/25/effort-made-to-get-out-the-student-vote-after-turnout-for-voters-aged-18-to-24-in-the-2011-federal-election-was-just-388
In a strange way our panel was in the end successful. Athough our panel lost the opportunity to talk directly to students, we gained the opportunity to talk to local media about the challenges to student voters.
What can you do to get the word out?
Join Vote Savvy on September 30th at the Bata Library for a Trent University Vote Mob; and join us October 8th for the "Meet your Party, Party" for Trivia, Questions with the Candidates, food, and information on how to vote.
